1. Where is Malawi located?

The Republic of Malawi is a democratic state which is densely populated, located at the south east of Africa. It borders Zambia to the northwest, is connected to Tanzania on the north, and is surrounded by Mozambique to the east, south, and west. Malawi is landlocked and also a country in the SADC (Southern African Development Community)

2. What city is the capital of Malawi?

The capital of Malawi is Lilongwe (Li-long-gwe) located at the heart of the country. This is the largest city of Malawi and the name of it is from the river flowing beside the city.

3. What language do Malawian people use in communication?

People from Malawi can speak various African dialects but the interlingua or official languages are Chichewa and English. The reason why English is one of the official languages is because Malawi was once a colonial city in the United Kingdom.

4. Religions of Malawi people

Approximately 87% of the population is Christian while 11% is Islamic. Moreover, there are also traditional religions, atheist, and so on such as Jewish, Sikhs, Baháʼí, and Rastafarianism, accounting to 2% of the rest of the population.

As we know that Malawi is a landlocked country surrounded by lakes in the valley forming a border at the east of Malawi, borders Mozambique and Tanzania. This sandy freshwater lake is home to the world’s largest number of fish that live in lakes. The country is alternative with highlands or meadows with high forests, mountains, and large wetlands. As a result, most of the country’s economy depends on agriculture.

Although the country is small and densely populated, 20% of Malawi is a protected area. For example, in the Nyika Plateau, there is a variety of wild animals such as antelopes, elephants, leopards, and buffalos, while both Liwonde National Park and Majete Wildlife Sanctuary are habitat destinations for the five kings of the forest.

Highlight activities in Malawi are scuba diving, snorkeling in Lake Malawi National Park, sailing a safari on the Shire river at Liwonde, hiking, and mountain biking at Nyika, also, there are 645 species of recorded animals. We can see birds everywhere.

6. A land with a history related to England

Most areas in Africa were colonial territories of the United Kingdom in 1850. It was the time when David Livingstone, an explorer and missionary in the Victorian era, started to explore the country. In 1889, this country was established as a protectorate of England. In 1907, it was named Nyasaland. In 1964, Malawi became independent and ruled as a republic.

7. Seasons in Malawi

Normally, during mid December to mid April is a ‘rainy season.’ During this period, there is heavy rain for a long time and usually it rains early in the morning then followed by a clear sky and fresh atmosphere. This is considered as the most beautiful time of the year in Malawi. However, this may cause some roads to be dangerous or unable to use that road.

Next, during mid May to late July is a ‘windy period.’ The weather is cold, the sky is clear, and there is a gentle breeze. This season is not suitable for water activities because lakes are rough with waves. This time is perfect to travel to various local villages. Most photographers agree that this time is perfect for visiting Malawi since the terrain is still green and has no rain.

Moving on to the time during July to December, this period is the ‘hot and dry’ season. The rain will come back and the average temperature per day is around 30 – 32 degree celsius and hardly moist. This time is quite cool and peaceful, and relaxing in a tropical atmosphere.

Nevertheless, the current global climate change may be quite unpredictable. It is best to prepare for all weather conditions.

8. What to pack

Things that should be packed before traveling to this country are light clothes, sandals, hats, and most importantly, sunscreen. In the morning and in the evening, there are a lot of mosquitoes flying out to hunt. The suitable way to dress if you are visiting this country is clothes that can protect you from mosquitoes such as long sleeves shirts or pants to protect your arms, legs, and feet during those times. Also, do not leave some empty space in your luggages because there are a lot of souvenirs from local markets for you to buy. 

9. Currency and payment

Malawian people use the currency called ‘Malawian Kwacha’ which is changed from the former currency named ‘Malawain pond.’ Usually, Malawi is the destination with relatively low expenses. Some places in Malawi can pay via credit card but it is recommended to carry cash when you travel to remote areas or places where tourists rarely go to visit.  

10. Flights and Travels

  • Lilongwe International Airport

The main international Airport provides its services at Lilongwe, a capital city of Malawi. This airport supports 5 airlines which are Airlink (South Africa),   Ethiopian Airlines, Kenya Airways, Proflight Zambia), and South African Airway. 

  • Chileka International Airport

Located in Blantyre, this is the second International Airport in Malawi serving its southern destination.

In terms of traveling, it is quite easy because most roads are in good condition and the distance is quite short. Public transportations is the best option for tourists, especially for those who would like to visit cities in Malawi. 

If you want t o go to lakes, the best option is to rent a small chartered plane. If you want to go to the islands, there will be a shuttle boat service that takes tourists to the islands of Lake Malawi.
