Check-list! Let’s pack and go to Malawi

Packing a bag is important to us so that we can travel comfortably, especially when planning a list of things to take with us will make it easier to pack our bags. This time, ACU PAY prepares a checklist for you before traveling to Malawi which is located in the heart of the African continent. Let’s see what is the guideline and how we should prepare ourselves.

Normally, Malawi is a tropical country. The rainy season in Malawi starts from November to April. All over the country, there will be a little rain or no rain at all from May to December. The temperatures and weathers will be very different depending on landscape and altitude. For example, the lake area will be warmer than Lilongwe or Mount Mulanje and Nyika Plateau are quite cold.

Therefore, what you should pack depends on the weather conditions of that location. Items to be packed should be something really important to not make your bag too heavy which can cause difficulties while traveling. The major items that should be included are as follows

Important items that must not be forgotten!

  • A passport
  • An ID card
  • Travel documentation
  • Cash (Malawian Kwacha)/ Credit cards
  • A plane ticket
  • An accommodation booking documentation

Clothes

Comfortable clothes should be carried with you to wear in the hot weather during the day and warm clothes to wear in case the weather is getting cold during the night and at dawn. Avoid colorful clothes.

For women, you should wear polite clothes, the length should be at your knee or down below your knee. You can buy proper clothes from locals such as colorful sarongs to cover your short skirt or shorts while going to the villages. You can use them as a shade from sunlight or use them to spice up your style for your evening walk.

For men, you can wear shirts or polo with shorts while going to the lake or long sleeve tops with pants while going to visit safari as well.

Those who are going to visit the lake are recommended to bring a swimming suite with you. Those who plan to travel in the north or winter should bring a jacket, a hat and a scarf as well.

Electric power and plug

Electric power is 230V, operating at 50Hz in both Malawi and Zambia. The type of plug used is a type G plug with a three-legged flat triangle,  the same as the plug in England.

Safari clothes

For walking safari, wear medium-colored clothes such as gray, and brown, and avoid flashy red and bright clothes because they can attract too much attention from animals and make them run away. However, if you go on a game drive or ride a car to see wildlife in the National Park, you don’t have to worry about your clothes.

It is also recommended that you avoid wearing camouflage uniforms like soldiers because they may attract undue attention from border patrols and beware of tsetse flies. In the evening, these insects usually prefer dark blue and black clothes, so avoid wearing these kinds of clothes and wear long pants, long sleeve tops and carry mosquito repellent spray.
