Where is Cape Maclear located?

Cape Maclear, also known as Chembe, is a small fishing village and is a city in Mangochi District, southern Malawi. Here, there is the busiest resort on Lake Malawi.

The origin of Cape Maclear

In 1859, when missionaries and explorers, David Livingstone discovered the Cape and named it Cape Maclear after his friend Thomas Maclear, Queen Victoria’s astronomer at Cape Good Hope. Previously, this area was controlled by Muslim Yao group.

After the missionary group entered, although Cape Maclear had a good port, the soil in that area was not as good as it should have been, and there were also tsetse flies. As a result, the missionaries had to relocate to Bandowe which is near Chintheche in 1882.
