Tourist Attractions! Holy places in Malawi

Approximately 87% of Malawian people are Christian, so there is no wonder why we often see beautiful christian churches wherever we go in Malawi. Besides Christian, Malawian people are also Islamics, Hindu and other religions which make us see the beauty inside architectures of each region as well. 

This time, ACU PAY will take you to visit sacred tourist attractions, peaceful places that hold people together as one. How beautiful of these holy places? Let’s start!

1. St Peter Cathedral Church, Likoma

St Peter Cathedral Church is an Anglican Church in Likoma Island. This is one of the most beautiful churches in the African continent. This church was built and dedicated to St Peter according to the name.

The statue faces the lake that surrounds the island. This is a  main tourist attraction in the city. This Cathedral church was mainly built from stones. The foundation stone was laid by Bishop Gerard Trower on January 27, 1903, which took about eight years to complete.

The outstanding characteristics of this church are arch windows and a beautiful aisle to the church which are the engineering work at that time and most construction materials were imported from abroad. On November 14, 1911, the cathedral church was consecrated to Bishop Thomas Fisher.

2. St. Michael and All Angels Church, Blantyre

St. Michael and All Angels Church is located in the place which used to be a missionary place of the traditional religion of Scotland in Blantyre. This church was built from 1888 – 1891 by Rev. David Clement Scott, an architect. This is the first permanent Christian church that was built between Zambezi and Nile.

This red brick church has been named a national monument by the Malawi Department of Antiquities and is one of Blantyre’s  biggest landmarks. Nevertheless, did you know that this church was built by an architect who had no experience in architecture or buildings. 

Moreover, local workers had no experience in this kind of construction. Also, there were no pictures or sketches before the construction. Thus, we can see that the towers on both sides are very different and are not designed to look similar, which is the notable quality of this church.

3. The Shree Satyanarayan Hindu Temple, Blantyre

The Shree Satyanarayan Hindu Temple is one of the most powerful Hindu places in Malawi. The arches or Gopura are decorated with the word “Om”, a Hindu religious symbol. The building is also beautifully white with classic columns surrounding it. This temple is a sacred place where most worshippers are descendants of Indians. Anyone who would like to visit this temple, it is located in Blantyre, southern Malawi.

4. Lilongwe Central Musjid, Al-Falah Mosque

Al-Falah Mosque is one of the beautiful mosques located in the heart of Lilongwe. This mosque has a modern design. The praying hall is designed as a square hall with a ceiling of two times the height of the normal room (double-volume rectangular hall) The mosque is painted in cream with brown trim, a dome located in the center, there is a four-story minaret that makes people pray loudly throughout the city.

5. Al Madinah Mosque, Mpingwe

This mosque has a modern appearance. The building is painted in brown alternately with green domes. The tallest and most peaked building is used as a space to pray and read the Quran. There is a fountain in front of it, and around it are beautiful lawns and palm trees with good parking. It can hold more than 500 believers and is open to Muslims to pray five times a day, similar to most mosques.

6. Bembeke Cathedral

This beautiful Bembeke church is a small local community near Dezda. It is a Catholic missionary school to spread Catholicism. It was built of red brick with white windows and a corridor. Inside the cathedral, are murals painted by local artist Michael Kapalamula. This is an ideal place to visit.
